Henry Moore on a Monday at the MoMA

Today may have been the most exciting day yet! I went to the MoMA to see a few exhibits that interested me – the “Migration” series of Jacob Lawrence paintings and a “one man show” by Yoko Ono. I thought that there would be nothing to offer me concerning books or other containment ideas that might help me but I was very wrong! Yoko’s artist book, “Grapefruit” was shown as well as many photographs by Zoe Leonard and drawings by Gilbert and George that were separate, serial, and stored as book works. As I was riding down the escalator in search of lunch at 2:15, I ran into Mary Anna and Leonard, friends from Raleigh N C who were as pleased to see me as I was to see them. Mary Anna was our first Journey Daybook alum and a long-time journal artist. We went into the nearby cafe, stroking and celebrating each other and our respective work for a beautiful hour. Both Mary Anna and I have been working a lot during this trip and it was so affirming to share our work, as we alternatively praised each other’s amazing talents! Later, MA and L went off to Coney Island for Leonard to take photos. I went down to the sculpture garden where I drew a Henry Moore sculpture – one I remember from an outdoor show in Florence in 1973 when I was studying egg tempera painting there.
