ds106.DesignAssignment.PostcardsfromMagicalPlaces – A Minecraft Island Camp

I enjoy this island camp which is similar, in many ways, to my island home. I send a postcard to an artist friend who is presently working in Mexico. This is my postcard to Amelia White.

This assignment challenged me but was fun because I used skills with with I am familiar along with exciting, new techniques. First, after learning about Minecraft, I copied the Minecraft environment from the site. I determined my desired postcard size. Then, I made the written side of my postcard on paper, ruling it and using two found stamps. I created a message to my fictitious friend and wrote the message in contrasting ink. I photoshopped a bit. Then, I scanned the written side and matched the sizes in my blog.

Please let me know what you think.

  1. Your postcard is lovely, Margaret. Elegant tall reeds and vivid blues and greens. Makes me wonder though if there’s something I’m missing in Minecraft. Everything looks a lot blotchier, boxy, pixelated there for me.

So did you give Minecraft a little assist with PhotoShop or do I need a new laptop?

Seriously, do you think that the Minecraft visual experience is vastly different depending on your computer. This looks much more like Second Life to me.

  2. I am a beginner at this. I never heard of Minecraft until a few days ago. I couldn’t figure out how to copy from the moving game; therefore I looked for another way. I found a site that offered skins and environments for Minecraft. Trying to be creatively innovative, I copied one of these and used it for the picture of my postcard. I don’t remember the name of the site.

  3. Totally awesome work here Margaret. The spin you’ve put on this assignment seems to dovetail nicely with your Journey Daybook idea. I love the way were so quickly able to incorporate Minecraft imagery into this (even though you confess being a beginner).

I agree with the June 17 comment from anonymous that the image you found looks vastly different than most other stuff I’ve seen from Minecraft. The bamboo stand and water certainly have a Second Life type of feel to me.

What I think I like best about what you’ve done is the use of your scanned original handwriting and postage stamps for the message side of the card. Who needs templates when you can create such a stunning effect on your own? Well done.

One or two ds106 logistical suggestions, if I may. It would nice if you could include a link back to the original assignment on the ds106 site in the body of your blog post so that others may get to it more easily.

Also, beware of the tagging convention. DesignAssignments needs to be written as a single word. Also, you need to include the tag for the specific assignment: DesignAssignments363 (again without spaces). The second tag assures that your post will show up in the list of past entries for the specific assignment.

Keep up the good work. I can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with next.

  4. Very cool, bold effect. Do you know if you or anyone else has shot a postcard in Minecraft using a different texture pack, apart from the Monkey’s one?

    All the beest,

    C
